From cricket to football

Like most football clubs in their early days, Sheffield Wednesday did not have a ground of their own and were forced to use other stadiums for their games, such as Bramall Lane and Olive Grove. They eventually settled at Hillsborough in 1889 and their departure from Bramall Lane gave rise to the founding of their great rivals, Sheffield United. Hillsborough is located in Owlerton in north-west Sheffield, which gives the club its nickname. "Wednesday" comes from the fact that the original cricket club from which they were formed, could play on Wednesdays only, the only day its amateur members could get off work. The football club was born out of a desire to keep fit in the winter, but it was soon so popular that it began to overshadow the cricket team. One of Sheffield Wednesday’s early legends was Charles Clegg, the so-called "Napoleon of Football". He played until he retired from the pitch and went on to be the club's chairman, as well as president of the Football League. Sheffield Wednesday has had something of a chequered history, experiencing success and failure in equal measure. In 1977 Jackie Charlton became manager and the fight back began, with a League Cup win equivalent of the Football League Trophy, and an FA Cup semi-final. Grit and determination

Sheffield Wednesday have always been a club for firsts and records. The first professional footballer in England was Sheffield Wednesday board member Charles Lang. The fastest shot ever recorded, at 114 mph, was hit by David Hirst in 1996. Sheffield Wednesday’s history is also marred by the terrible tragedy of 1989, when many lives were lost in what has become known as the Hillsborough Disaster. Terrible as this event was, it did change the way football stadiums were built and made them much safer and more comfortable for the fans.
