Get Up and Dance with Shalamar Tickets
Shalamar is a music group turned dance trio that reigned in the 1970s and 80s, treating audiences not only to vocal styling, but also trendsetting dance moves. The group's members have changed over the years, starting out with Gary Mumford, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel, and later including such talents as Gerald Brown, Howard Hewett, Micki Fee, Sydney Justin, and Delisa Davis. Shalamar covers everything from disco and funk to soul and boogie.Schedule
Shalmar typically tours every year but performs just a handful of events. As such, fans will want to snap up Shalamar tickets as soon as they find them. Concerts are typically hosted in cities like York, Oxford, Greenwich, Manchester, and London. This kind of party is made for the weekend, so put on your dancing shoes for a Friday or Saturday night Shalamar concert.
Trivia
Michael Jackson was among Shalamar's many fans. The pop icon met group member Jeffrey Daniel and took Janet Jackson to see the group perform.
Group member Howard Hewett left the group in 1985 to start a solo career. Jody Watley took a leap into a solo career in 1997. She won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist for her efforts.
Though the group broke up in 1990, Shalamar was only temporarily down, but not out. Six years later, Shalamar was back in business again, with Watley, Hewett, and Daniel reuniting to work with LL Cool J on a single with singer Babyface. The single, which was actually a cover of Shalamar's This Is for the Lover in You sold millions of copies.
Band
Beginning in the late 1970s, Shalamar let loose one dance-soul hit after another. The group had a pop vibe from the very beginning, but that wasn't all the group had going for them. In addition to its musical hits, the trio set trends in fashion, and brought fans many new dance moves. Shalamar is often credited with the introduction of body popping in the United Kingdom.
Dick Griffey, a booking agent for Soul Train, is credited with creating the group, though Soul Train's Don Cornelius definitely had a hand in it. Shalamar provided its particular brand of music and entertainment into the late 80s, though it saw some major turnover of artists. It got a second wind from 1996 to 1997 and finally made a solid return in 2001, remaining active since.
Breakthrough
In 1997, the then unnamed group made its debut with the medley Uptown Festival. The artists were virtually unknown then, but the album was well received. The success of the medley spurred Dick Griffey to form a musical group and name it Shalamar. Then, working with Don Cornelius, he found the original three members of the group. Disco Gardens, one of the group's first albums, included the hit Take That to the Bank. The album rose to number 52 on the R&B Chart.
Hit Albums
Shalamar has had a number of hits, including Big Love, Three for Fun, and Friends.
Big Fun, the group's third studio album, peaked at number 4 on the R&B Chart and went gold. Three for Fun, Shalamar's fourth studio album, also went gold, peaking at number 8 on the same chart. Friends broke the mould, going platinum in the United Kingdom and making it to number 1 on the R&B Chart.
Show Experience
Going to a Shalamar show means seeing the power trio of Watley, Daniel, and Hewett back together again. Shows feature energetic songs, high-energy dancing, and plenty of interaction with the audience. Besides big smiles and engaging comments, audience members are often asked to sing along as the group performs its hits and treats concert-goers to a party atmosphere --Shalamar style.
