A surprise rugby world championship package
The country originally known as Western Samoa competed in their first international game way back in 1924 and continued to play against local nations as the sport grew in popularity. In 1982 they won the inaugural tri-series against fellow Pacific Islands, Fiji and Tonga, and following their first major tour of Europe qualified for the 1991 rugby world championship. Nicknamed Manu Samoa after the famous Samoan warrior, the team proved to be a surprise package, beating both Wales and Argentina Rugby, and only narrowly losing to eventual winners Australia on their way to the quarter-finals. They repeated their success four years later thanks to victories over Italy and Argentina, and then again in 1999, when they first competed under the name Samoa, thanks to a shock defeat of hosts Wales Rugby Union. They remained participants of the rugby world championships over the next two decades, recording their biggest ever victory, 115-7 over Papa New Guinea, during qualification for 2011, and then famously beating hot favourites Australia Rugby during the tournament itself. An historic home ground
Samoa play their home games at Apa Park, one of the most historic grounds in international rugby union. The 15,000-capacity venue was first used to stage the country's first ever game in the mid-20th Century and has since hosted various Pacific and Youth Games. Brian Lima, To'o Vaega and Semo Sititi, all of whom have earned more than 50 caps each, are just a few of the notable players to have pulled on the famous blue and white jersey over the years, with others including record-breaking point scorers Tusi Pisi, veteran captain Pat Lam and London Irish teammates Motu Matu'u, Filo Paulo and Ofisa Treviranus. Samoa have also enjoyed a strong connection with New Zealand rugby union, having appointed several coaches from the country and selected several players born there with Samoan heritage. If you haven't yet experienced the highly-charged atmosphere of Apa Park, or the famous Samoan war dance known as the Siva Tau that the players perform before each game, then book your Samoa Rugby Union tickets on StubHub.
