The only child of a singer and jazz musician/jingle writer, performance was a natural progression for this aspiring musician, who was already singing commercial jingles for his father by the tender age of five. After a tape of his songs ended up in the hands of Lionel Richie, the then 17-year-old artist was invited to LA, where he helped out with backing vocals on Richie's debut solo album - leading to a stint as backing vocalist for the likes of Madonna and Whitney Houston.

June 1987 saw the soloist release his eponymous debut album, which spawned four hit singles - including the chart-topping 'Hold on to the Nights' - making him the first male artist to have four singles from his debut album chart within the Top Three positions. Over his 30 year career his winning streak has continued, with the singer most closely associated with the smash 1989 ballad 'Right Here Waiting'. The vastly talented singer-songwriter has also been a much sought-after artist for his songwriting talents, having produced hits including 'NSYNC's 'This I Promise You' and Keith Urban's 'Long Hot Summer'.
