Born in 1968, this Lancashire lad was initially more interested in becoming a pop star than a science icon. After learning to play the keyboard he joined hard-rockers Dare, in which he played for two years before leaving to pursue a career in physics. His passion for music again surfaced during his undergraduate degree as he continued to play as part of D:Ream, responsible for 1997 hit 'Things Can Only Get Better'. His first class honours degree placed him firmly back on the scientific track and saw him secure a PhD in particle physics. After first appearing on BBC 1's Horizon in 2005, he has filmed a number of shows with the aim of "making science sexy", culminating in his own series, The Wonders Of The Universe. Able to get across complex ideas in an accessible way, his handsome looks have helped him become an unlikely sex symbol. His expert straddling of entertainment and education saw him named an OBE in 2010.
