Paul Weller: Modfather still going strong
Born in 1958 as John Weller, the singer quickly became known as Paul to family and friends and grew up listening to The Beatles and The Who. It was a Status Quo concert however that piqued his musical spark and eventually led to the formation of The Jam with his friends from school in the late 1970s. The Jam, formed in 1976, went on to have a string of hits, standing out from the crowd of punk rocker bands, with chart hits such as "Town Called Malice" and "That's Entertainment". The Clash became an early advocate of the band, taking them on tour as their main support in 1977. All of their subsequent singles hit high in the charts, with "Going Underground" getting them the number one spot in 1980.
A surprise split in 1982 led the Jam's singer in a different, more soulful direction with The Style Council, who went on to have six successful years. Deciding to go solo in 1992, the Mod king has since re-established himself as a leading British singer-songwriter, tapping into the acid jazz scene and appealing to a whole new quota of fans. His 1995 album Stanley Road took him back up to the top of the charts and further successes included Heliocentric, 22 Dreams and the Mercury Prize nominated Wake Up the Nation. Awarded the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2006, rock superstar Paul Weller has continued to be relevant in the ever-evolving music environment and is back to display his latest development of sound.
