No Doubt Biography - From Dairy Queen to International Domination
In 1986 Eric Stefani and John Spence formed No Doubt after meeting at a fast food restaurant, with the latter acting as lead singer and Eric's sister Gwen on backing vocals. However, they would disband the following year before regrouping with a new line-up, including Gwen stepping up as frontwoman. The band then toured their local haunts and were eventually signed by Interscope Records in 1990. Competing with Seattle grunge groups popular at the time, the band struggled with album sales until new dynamics were brought into the songwriting process and a rawer, punk tinge was added to their ska sound. Stefani's powerfully emotive lyrics saw the band finally achieve mainstream success with Just a Girl' and ballad Don't Speak'.
Since the mid-'90s, the band have gone from strength to strength, clocking up multiple Grammy nominations, producing multi-platinum albums and touring with the likes of Blink 182 and Red Hot Chili Peppers. After going on hiatus in the mid-'00s, the group are back to their best, known for their quirky style and incredible on-stage presence.
