Specialising in the creation of electronic pop tunes, Muna is a three-piece that is based in Los Angeles. The three members of Muna, Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson, met when they were all studying at the University of California. Coming together at a party in 2013, Maskin and McPherson began playing with one another on the guitar. Gavin, who was majoring in music, joined the pair and added her unique vocals to complete Muna's burgeoning sound. Although McPherson had been used to playing with a heavier sound, she found that Gavin's vocals gave the trio a poppier feel. As a result, the three realised that they could come up with some radio-friendly songs that would meet the demands of commercial pop.
Muna's career milestones
Over the course of the first 12 months or so that Muna was in existence, McPherson, Maskin and Gavin experimented with their sound. They moved away from guitar-driven songs towards tracks that were based more in electronica, although the use of string instruments never truly disappeared. By the middle of 2014, the band was ready to unleash their debut EP on the world. Entitled More Perfect, it was self-released on the BandCamp and SoundCloud musical sharing online platforms and led to plenty of listeners streaming the band's uniquely poppy sound.
Largely due to the interest Muna garnered from their self-released EP, the trio began to gain the attention of recording labels. Sensing their potential for mainstream appeal, RCA Records made the band an offer, which was ultimately accepted, for their recording and distribution work in the United States. This deal was somewhat mirrored by the offer made to them by Columbia Records in the UK. After this, Muna set about working on their next EP, which would come out in May 2016. It was called Loudspeaker and featured some R 'n' B sounds as well as some interesting synthesizer work from McPherson.
After the release of Loudspeaker, Muna played a breakthrough gig at the prestigious Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. They then set about a North American tour, supporting the indie rock band Grouplove, bringing Muna to a much wider audience. Later in 2016, the trio made their first TV performance when they appeared on the Tonight Show. In 2017, Muna announced that they were going to tour with the pop singer Harry Styles in Europe and the United States. In spite of all the live work that the band was carrying out in late 2016 and early 2017, they found time to record their debut album. Entitled About U, it was released in February of 2017.
