Growing up in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Meghan Trainor enjoyed a musical childhood and was inspired by her music teacher father to start learning various instruments and singing at an early age, before writing her own songs at the age of 11. In 2004, she performed publicly for the first time at her aunt and uncle's wedding where she played 'Heart and Soul' on the piano. She was a member of a jazz band for three years during high school, before enrolling at Berklee College of Music where she received high marks and was particularly commended for her vocal talent and songwriting ability.

By the age of 18, she had self-released three albums, leading to a lucrative deal with Epic Records. Her debut single 'All About That Bass' was released to widespread acclaim in 2014 and the video became a viral internet sensation. The empowering song, where Meghan declares she's 'no stick figure silicon Barbie doll' racked up over 1,600,000 views on YouTube within a month, with the track becoming one of the biggest global smash hits of the year including eight weeks at the top of the U.S charts and international sales amounting to six million.
