Mariza Biography - The Master From Mozambique
Hailing from Mozambique and born in 1973, this pioneer of fado music was inspired to record her debut album after performing a tribute song for the late Amalia Rodrigues, a pioneer of the genre. The result was the 2001 album Fado em Mim, which sold 100,000 copies - a huge amount for the genre. The record went on to be released worldwide and made her a world music star. As her profile rose she sang the Portuguese national anthem at the 2002 football World Cup then, in 2003, she released Fado Curvo, her second album.
Appearing on shows such as Later With Jools Holland cemented her profile and she performed at the seminal Live 8 concert as well as touring the world. Albums such as 2007's Concerto em Lisboa continued her rich vein of form with Fado Tradicional, her 2010 record, arguably her greatest to date.
