Lighthouse Family: One of Britain’s most iconic musical duos
Ask any British person who lived during the '90s what the most iconic songs of the decade were, and you can practically guarantee they’ll name a couple of Lighthouse Family songs. Although often related to the Britpop movement, their brand of music, which blended elements of soul, pop and R&B struck a chord with millions who yearned for something less rocky and more uplifting. Uplifting pop music that’s good for the soul
The founding members, vocalist Tunde Baiyewu and keyboardist Paul Tucker, met while at Newcastle University and in 1993 the band was formed. Their first album—"Ocean Drive"—came out in 1995. Although it received great reviews, it wasn’t initially a commercial success. It was, however, somewhat of a sleeper album. By 1998, it had gone six-times platinum and was on the UK Album Charts for a staggering 154 weeks. The success was helped in part due to what is one of their most well-known singles, "Lifted". Like the album, it was not popular at first, but a re-release in 1996 saw it debut at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and it would come to be recognised as one of the most iconic British pop songs British of the '90s, cementing the band’s status alongside other Britpop legends like Blur, Pulp and the similarly-soulful M People. The long wait for new Lighthouse Family material ends
Of course, their first album wasn’t their only successful release. "Postcards from Heaven" came out in 1997 to critical acclaim, reaching the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart and going six-times platinum. It also included another of their smash hits, "High", which would be their biggest-selling single to date. Another top 10 album would follow in 2001 ("Whatever Gets You Through the Day"), but following this, the two members went their separate ways and a long hiatus followed. Fortunately for fans of the Lighthouse Family, they reformed in 2010 and went on a sell-out tour of Ireland and the UK. Despite successful touring, it wasn’t until 2019 that their 4th album, "Blue Sky in Your Head", was released. Critics praised it as having all the elements that made them so popular in the '90s but with a more mature, contemporary sound. Decades after they first formed, they are still going strong, putting on spectacular live shows that draw on their extensive catalogue of music. Whether you want to see one of their awe-inspiring live shows for yourself, or if you have a ticket you can’t use, StubHub is the perfect site to both buy and sell Lighthouse Family tickets.
