James Bay: rapid rise to the top

Hailing from a small town in Hertfordshire, much buzzed-about James Bay grew up listening to throwback soul stars including Carole King and James Taylor. At the age of 11, he started to play his dad's old guitar, learning old-school tracks he loved such as Eric Clapton's "Layla" by ear.

His began performing his music around the pubs and clubs of Brighton during his time at university, and then moved to the bright lights of London to seek greater success. A breakthrough came in 2013 when a fan uploaded a video of the singer-songwriter performing at an open mic night in London, and within a week he was scouted by Republic Records. Soon after signing the deal, he released debut EP The Dark of the Morning, and single "Hold Back the River" made an instant impact on the airwaves, eventually peaking at number two in the charts. Fast acquiring a cult following for his heartfelt indie output, Bay soared to the top of the UK album charts with his debut record Chaos and the Calm after snapping up the Critics' Choice award at the 2015 BRIT Awards.

His memorable folk melodies have led to supporting slots alongside high profile acts including The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder, as well as Kodaline and Tom Odell. Following this sudden breakthrough into the music scene, the soulful Hertfordshire singer had his own worldwide tour, appeared on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and won a second Brit Award for Best British Male Solo Artist.
