The best teams and players in one competition
The hard-fought tournament originally took place between eight teams: Canada Women's National Hockey, the USA Women's National Hockey Team, the five top qualifiers from the European championships, and one qualifier from Asia. This format was used for the tournaments held in 1992, 1994, and 1997, although it was altered after the winter competitions at Nagano. Since 1999, the top five from the winter competitions qualified along with the top three teams from the winter competitions qualifying rounds. It also became a yearly tournament, with promotion and relegation formats for the lower ranked teams. The rules are the same for the women's championship as they are for the men's, apart from body-checking, and players are just as tough! So, if you're up for some fast-paced action on ice, look no further than this incredible ice hockey tournament. Canada and the USA: the ones to beat
Canada continues to hold the title of the most successful team with 10 titles to its name as of 2018. The USA follows closely with eight and is the only other team to reach the finals with Canada. The rest of the ice hockey world seems unable to stop these two giant teams, yet there's always a first! Big ice hockey nation Finland holds 12 bronze medals, with Russia next in line with just three. Sweden and Switzerland are the only other teams to gain a bronze medal as of 2018. Things look a little different in the men's tournament, however, as the Russia National Ice Hockey Team holds the top spot with 27 titles as of 2018. At both IIHF Ice Hockey Championships, awards are given to the best players regardless of where their team places in the competition. Titles include Best Forward, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defenceman, and Most Valuable Player. Players such as Canadian Jennifer Botterill have had particularly successful tournaments, winning both awards for Most Valuable Player and Best Forward. Finnish goalkeeper Noora Räty has won four Best Goalkeeper awards. The championships clearly showcase the best global talent in the sport of ice hockey, which you can now witness for yourself.
