Hollywood Vampires: Johnny Depp teams up with Joe Perry and Alice Cooper
Formed in 2015 by Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry, Hollywood Vampires is an American rock super group that plays and honours the music of the rock stars who died from excess in the 1970s. The band name derives from The Hollywood Vampires, a celebrity drinking club formed by Cooper in the 1970s.
The band has released one studio album, Hollywood Vampires (2015) which included the songs of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and other groups which lost members in the 1970s. The record features guest appearances by Sir Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, and Christopher Lee, while the band's touring members has included the likes of Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum, as well as Robert DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots.
Cooper and Perry have discussed plans for a future live album and the band continue to perform throughout Europe. Buy Hollywood Vampires tickets now at StubHub to see this unique super group live.
Hollywood Vampires: celebrity drinking club turned super group
Initiation into Cooper's hell-raising Hollywood Vampires club was dependent on being able to out drink all of the current members which included the likes of John Lennon and Ringo Starr of The Beatles, Keith Moon of The Who, T. Rex's Marc Bolan and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees.
"The Speakeasy and Tramps were the place to be in London. There was a little loft at the Rainbow Bar and Grill in LA (West Hollywood), they only had that for the club," said Cooper. " "It was that crowd, every night those same people. Every once in a while John Lennon would come into town or Keith Emerson and they would be honourable members of the night. They still have a plaque there at the Rainbow, where it says 'The Lair of the Hollywood Vampires'".
On producing the album of covers for his drinking buddies, Cooper said: "Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix of course were before the Vampires. But they were, like, early, early-breed Vampires. They would have been there every single night."
