The Guinness Pro14 Rugby league began as the Welsh-Scottish League in 1999, which became the Celtic League after it was expanded to include teams from Ireland as well as Scotland and Wales under the sponsorship of Magners until 2011. A further expansion then included teams from Italy, and these 12 teams were referred to as the Pro12. At the start of the 2017 season, the league was once again expanded to include two teams from South Africa and was rebranded as the Guinness Pro14 league. Guinness Pro14 is comparable to other professional rugby leagues, such as the Dubai Rugby Sevens, Lipovitan D Challenge Cup and Betfred Super League Grand Final. The format of the league has changed as it has expanded over the years. In the beginning, there were only two groups that competed in a knockout system, which was then changed to one group with the winner determined by most points won. In 2017, the format was revised to use conferences and feature matches between teams from the same country, known as 'derby games', giving rugby fans more games and quality matchdays to savour. Teams from the five nations of Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Italy and South Africa make up the Guinness Pro14 league with four each from Ireland and Wales and two each from the other countries, providing several exciting derby games. Leinster defeated Munster in an all-Ireland final in the very first Celtic League competition in 2001 and has gone on to win an additional four titles as the league's most successful team. The success of this league can be determined by the attendance numbers: in 2001 30,000 fans attended the league final, compared to over 51,000 fans who attended a match between the same two teams in 2016.
