Europa League semi finals tickets generally sell out fast. Fans come from all over Europe to cheer on their favourite team. After months of qualifying rounds, the best teams move forward to participate in one of the most prestigious tournaments of the year.
The team that wins the Europa League automatically qualifies to participate in the Super Cup and next Champions League tournament. The winning team enters the tournament no lower than the play-off round. How the team has performed domestically is also a deciding factor in where the team is placed.
Over the years, the Europa League title has been won by 28 different clubs. Twelve clubs have emerged victorious more than once. Sevilla has been the most successful club with five titles under their belt.
History of the Europa League
Before the creation of the Cup, the competition was run by the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. This European football competition was held annually from 1955 to 1971. In the beginning there were only 11 teams in the tournament. By 1971 (when the competition officially ended), the number of entrants had increased to 64 teams. The event had become so popular and important to the European football scene that the Union of European Football Associations took over the reigns and relaunched the competition the following season.
Qualifying for the Europa League
Certain criteria must be met before a team is allowed to play in the games. has developed a number of deciding factors and more successful nations are offered much better entrance rounds. In most cases, where in the tournament a country will be placed depends of how the team has performed in various other leagues and competitions. Typically, teams in the Europa League are not eligible for the Champions League.
There is more than one way for a team to qualify for European competitions. However, in all cases, a club that is eligible to participate in the Champions League will not enter the Europa League. Their position in the tournament is then given to the next qualifying club.
Traditionally, the competition was strictly by knockout. Every tie was two-legged, including the finals. The one-off match format for the final started in the 1997-98 season, but ties in other rounds remained as two-legged events.
Prior to the 2004-05 season, teams participated in one qualifying round and then a series of knockout rounds. After the 2004-05 season, the format was changed to two knockout qualifying rounds. Teams with a rank of 18 or lower participated in the first qualifying round. These teams join teams with a rank of 9-18 in the second qualifying round. Three positions in the first qualifying round and 11 positions in the second qualifying round were reserved for teams qualifying under special circumstances - such as ranking or cup wins.
