Deportivo Alaves make their mark in Europe
The club plays their home games at Mendizorrotza Stadium, in the city of Alava. They’re known as Babazorros, which is a compound word that translates as a sack of fava beans, a staple of the region – which has inevitably led to rival fans calling them “the bean eaters”. Nonetheless, they do a lot of their feasting on field, notching their belt with the scalps of the country’s top teams. The club first put the European football scene on notice when they made the finals of the premier European club competition, on debut in 2001. Unfortunately, they missed out on a rookie championship at the hands of Liverpool FC, in an agonising way, through an own golden goal in extra time. As a consolation, it’s still remembered as one of the greatest games in the history of European competition. They also reached the finals of Spain’s premier cup competition, the Copa Del Rey, in 2017, losing to FC Barcelona.

After what are now referred to as “the black years” within the club, spent in Segunda B, the third tier of Spanish football, they blasted back into La Liga in 2016, just pipping CD Leganes to earn their promotion in their last game of the season against Numancia. They won their opening La Liga game in determined fashion against Barcelona and ended the season in ninth place – their best performance in 20 years. In the meantime, the club earned a more illustrious nickname based on its La Liga performances, becoming known as El Glorioso (The Glorious Ones). The club also fielded an alternative team in the then US First Division in 2007, playing under the name of California Victory. This only lasted a year, however. In 2018, the club bought shares in NK Istra 1961, one of the top clubs in Croatia, to use as a feeder team for young talent. You can watch them in action yourself easily enough, by getting your own Deportivo Alaves tickets on StubHub.
