Deacon Blue Biography - Celebrating 30 Years Together
Couple Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh brought the band together in Glasgow in the early '80s, with the original line-up including James Prime, Dougie Vipond, Ewen Vernal and Graeme Kelling. In 1987, first album Raintown found immediate commercial success, debuting at number 14 in the UK charts and building on the success found by fellow Scottish artists like Wet Wet Wet. Second LP When the World Knows Your Name did even better, landing in the charts at number one and spawning top 30 hits like 'Real Gone Kid', 'Fergus Sings the Blues' and 'Wages Day'.
Their group continued to prove popular into the '90s, with following albums Fellow Hoodlums and Whatever You Say, Say Nothing both securing top five spots in the charts and saw them transition from rock and blues to a more alternative style. Their 1994 greatest hits compilation gave them a second UK number one but despite being at the height of their career, Vipond's decision to leave the group led to its disbandment the very same year. However, the remaining members came back together five years later to release Walking Back Home, an album containing both new material and reworkings of old tracks, followed by Homesick in 2001. After the sad passing of Kelling in 2004, the band continued to put on the occasional performance but 2012's The Hipsters was their first release in over a decade. With seventh album A New House adding to their impressive collection in 2014, the set list for the group's 30th anniversary tour is sure to be memorable.
