Discover their history
Football as a sport first became popular in the Canary Islands around the 19th century. The actual foundation date of the club was under dispute for a long time, with some claiming the date as 1912 and others as 1922. The dispute was resolved in 2008, when it came to light that the Clube Deportivo Tenerife, better known simply as "Tenerife" or "Tête" to its fans, was established as a professional football club in 1912 under the name Sporting Club Tenerife, changing its name ten years later. In the 1992-93 and 1995-96 seasons, CD Tenerife reached the fifth place in La Liga, its best result at the time. During that season they won the Joan Gamper Trophy against FC Barcelona. In the course of their history, CD Tenerife have had some ups and downs, having played on and off in the top two football leagues in Spain: the first division, named "Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División" (or simply La Liga), and the second division, known as "Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Segunda División", or La Liga 2.
