Bjork - Genius of Genre Reinvention

As a square peg of a singer, this Iceland-born musical phenom has never neatly conformed to the image of a traditional pop star. The early days of her career were as mind-bendingly scattershot as they come, with the performer drawing upon her classical training as she flitted among anarchist punk and goth rock groups during the '80s. It wasn't until the early '90s that she went solo, doing an about-face for her inaugural album Debut, whose dance-rock-meets-hip-hop sound won her 'Album of the Year' standing from NME. Wonderfully eccentric music videos directed by the likes of Michel Gondry accompanied her rise to the top, further underlining the performer's penchant for kooky creativity.

The latter revealed a darker, more contemplative talent for songwriting, as with the landmark tracks 'Army of Me' and 'Unravel'. A foray into acting occurred during the late '90s, when she took the lead role in director Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark. Originally tasked with simply scoring the film, her eventual dramatic turn earned her the Best Actress Award at Cannes.

With unrelenting originality she continues to reinvent herself as a solo artist, most recently with the multimedia spectacle of her Biophilia show.
