The BFI IMAX cinema was inaugurated in 1999 and was built following a design by English architect Bryan Avery. The structure won several awards in the following couple of years including a "Civil Trust" award and a "Design Council Millenium Product" award, thanks to special features in the design such as noise propagation prevention and the addition of anti-vibration bearings. This cinema can seat up to 500 guests, and in its initial years, it used a 70 mm projector to play films, until 2012, when a special IMAX projector was added to its equipment for better 3D projections.
