The burgeoning writer later went on to form 'Til Tuesday with whom she released three albums before embarking on a solo career. In 1993 folk-flecked solo debut Whatever was released to critical acclaim, with Elvis Costello praising her lyrical skills. After a drawn-out struggle to free herself from record label Imago, she won her independence at the end of 1995. Signing with DGC Records, sophomore LP I'm With Stupid was put out containing minor hit single 'That's Just What You Are'. The songwriter's big breakthrough came, however, in early 2000 when she wrote the soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson's critically acclaimed film Magnolia.
Concept album The Forgotten Arm, about a drug-addicted boxer returning from Vietnam, was met with rave reviews on its release in 2006 and the singer later tried to develop it for the stage.
