History and Legends of the Oche

The history of the World Matchplay is rich with legendary performances and iconic champions. From its very first tournament in 1994, won by American Larry Butler in a major upset, the event has been a stage for greatness. However, one name is etched into the very fabric of this competition: Phil 'The Power' Taylor. With an incredible 16 titles, Taylor's dominance at the Winter Gardens is a record that may never be surpassed. His connection to the event is so profound that the trophy was permanently renamed the Phil Taylor Trophy in his honour.

In the years since Taylor's era, a new generation of superstars has risen to the challenge, including multiple-time winners like Michael van Gerwen. The tournament's unique leg-play format, where matches must be won by two clear legs, ensures constant drama and thrilling, nail-biting conclusions. This format tests the players' stamina and mental fortitude to the absolute limit. This intense knockout action is a key reason why it is considered a premier event, alongside other majors like the Grand Slam of Darts.
