More than six decades after the men's game witnessed the first World Cup, the sport of women's football was finally given the chance to stage its own official version. In a sign of things to come, the U.S. Women's National Soccer team ran out as winners at the inaugural 1991 event, beating Norway 2-1 in the final. A tournament growing in popularity

The Women's World Cup has only continued to grow in popularity since its arrival on the sporting calendar in the early 1990s, with a record 1.34 million people buying tickets for the 2015 tournament in Canada.
