USA the team to beat
More than six decades after the men's game witnessed the first World Cup, the sport of women's football was finally given the chance to stage its own official version. In a sign of things to come, the U.S. Women's National Soccer team ran out as winners at the inaugural 1991 event, beating Norway 2-1 in the final. The same nation also picked up the coveted trophy on home soil eight years later, with a memorable penalty shoot-out victory against China PR and then again in 2015 by defeating the reigning champions, Japan Women's National Soccer. Other winners have included Norway in 1995 and Germany Women's National Soccer in both 2003 and 2007, while Sweden and Brazil have also made the final. Since 2015, 24 teams from across the six different continental zones have competed in the Cup, which begins with a four-team round robin tournament before moving onto three knockout rounds and then the final. That same year, organisers announced that the World Cup would be staged in France for the first time in 2019. You can both buy and sell World Cup Football Women's World Cup tickets on StubHub.
A tournament growing in popularity

Notable players to have graced its stage include strikers Marta, Birgit Prinz and Abby Waumbach, all of whom have scored more than a dozen World Cup goals over the years; Brazil's Formiga and Japan's Homare Sawa, who have both competed in the same six tournaments in a row; and Christie Pearce, who at 40 years old became the tournament's oldest ever competitor in 2015. As well as the main trophy, organisers also hand out awards for the best player (Golden Ball), highest goal scorer (Golden Boot), and best goalkeeper (Golden Glove) as well as accolades for best goal, best young player and fair play.
