Formation and AFL success

Based in Perth, one of the most isolated cities in the world, the West Coast Eagles are one of just two AFL clubs in western Australia, the other being their main rivals Fremantle FC. The club was founded as an expansion team in 1986 and entered the AFL (or the Victorian Football League as it was then known) the following year alongside the Brisbane Bears. The West Coast Eagles reached the 1988 season finals and contested the grand final in 1991, losing out to Hawthorn FC. The next season, however, the Eagles won their first premiership title in a grand finale against Geelong FC, becoming the first team outside of Victoria to win an AFL title. The club won further championships in 1994, 2006 and 2018, making them the second most successful club behind Hawthorn FC since the beginning of the AFL (1990). The origin of Australian rules football can be traced back to Melbourne, 1858. Inspired by English football, early developers sought to construct a sport more suited to Australian conditions. So, in 1859, the initial laws of Aussie football were published by the Melbourne Football Cup, making it the oldest code of football in the world. The sport consists of two teams of eighteen players who compete to kick a rugby-style ball between two goal posts. Players cannot throw or hold the ball and must touch or bounce it on the ground intermittently whilst running with it.
