The British Darts Organisation (BDO) introduced this prestigious tournament in in 1978 in the hope of identifying the very best darts player in the world. It was the only global darts competition until 1994, when a breakaway group known as the Professional Darts Corporation began staging its own event. The BDO's contest was first held in Nottingham then Stoke before taking residency at the elegant Lakeside Country Club in 1986. One of the UK's top sporting venues, this 1,200-capacity auditorium boasts a licensed bar, souvenir shop and a huge catering kitchen. It has played host to some of the most amazing feats in the history of the game, including when American player Paul Lim defied all odds to finish with a 9 dart victory in 1990 - taking home a £50,000 cash bonus for his troubles. Other famous incidents include when young newcomer Keith Deller beat the world's top 3 players including Eric Bristow in 1993 and not to forget the notorious 1999 'Clash of the Titans' match between Phil 'the Power' Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld.
