From its inception, the Vitality Blast was designed to be a spectacle for spectators. In 2003 it was decided to replace the Benson & Hedges Cup, a one-day competition, with a new first-class tournament that would draw crowds back to the game. The new T20 format was the perfect choice and the Twenty20 Cup came into existence, later changed to Vitality Blast. Along with a new game format came new ways to enjoy cricket. These shorter games became jam-packed with all kinds of entertainment for the whole family, set to the sounds of the ultimate cricket fan song, "Dreadlock Holiday" by 10cc – hear "I don't like cricket … " and you know the rest. A measure of the exciting nature of the competition is that in the first seven years of the tournament it was won by six different teams, with the inaugural trophy going to Surrey CCC, playing in their T20 guise as the Surrey Lions. High up there on the list of regular winners is county team Leicestershire CCC, known as the Leicester Foxes for the purposes of the competition. Vitality Blast has always played in the UK summer holidays so that schoolkids can go and watch with their parents. T20 is very much the family fun version of the sport, having taken over this role from the one-day format.
