Written in 1887 for the star of the day, Sarah Bernhardt, it was an astounding success, played over 3,000 times in France. Hesitant to let an unknown Italian composer adapt his play, it took some time before Sardou gave his consent to the enterprise. On the opening night, royals and prominent politicians turned out to watch the show, which featured several encores. Followed by 20 sold out performances, the opera was a clear audience favourite and it has since been one of the most frequently performed operas.
