A Wizard, a True Star
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Todd Rundgren first caught attention as the founding member of psychedelic rockers Nazz in 1967 before going solo with the 'Runt' album three years later. He scored a dozen US Hot 100 hits over the next decade thanks to an innovative blend of prog, power pop, and rock that inspired countless artists, with 1973's 'A Wizard, a True Star' considered to be his most seminal work. He also served as producer on seminal records for the likes of Badfinger, the New York Dolls, and Meat Loaf, and in 1973 formed his second major outfit, the ever-changing Utopia. Rundgren's experimental streak extended beyond his musical output. He helped to stage the first ever interactive TV concert and album as well as the first colour graphics tablet, and he was one of the first artists to harness the power of the internet. A live show that's anything but predictable
As you'd expect from an artist known for thinking outside the box, the Todd Rundgren live experience is anything but predictable. The musical maverick typically plays a handful of the US Hot 100 hits from his 1970s commercial heyday, including 'I Saw the Light', 'Hello It's Me', and 'We Gotta Get You A Woman'. But elsewhere, it's anything goes. In fact, Rundgren and his four long-time backing band members often don't decide what they're going to play until they hit the stage. This freewheeling approach makes for an exciting and surprising show in which random cover versions of tracks by Weezer, Tony Bennett and The Proclaimers sit alongside reworkings of classic tracks, the odd throwback to his days in Nazz and Utopia, and cult fan favourites in the lengthy setlist. Ever the eccentric showman, Rundgren also enjoys regaling the audience with anecdotes about his half-century in the music industry and interacting with the fans who have supported him throughout.
