More About Theatre Royal Brighton - Built on Ingenuity

Constructed within 10 short months, this Grade II-listed building is amongst the oldest working theatres in the UK. Honoured with Royal Assent by The Prince of Wales in 1806, the venue's opening night the following year saw a production of Shakespeare's Hamlet performed to a packed crowd.

Experiencing mixed fortunes over the next half century, the establishment was on the brink of financial ruin when actor Henry John Nye Chart took over the management. Although not considered among the most distinguished of actors, he did however shine as a manager and with the aid of architect Charles J. Phipps he started to repair the business' reputation. In 1876, his wife Ellen Elizabeth Nye Chart took charge after her husband's death and through hard work and dedication she managed to revive the venture's fortunes.

In the years since, ownership of the building has changed hands numerous times, but one thing has remained constant - a reputation for great shows in stunning surroundings. From Othello and Macbeth to modern contemporary performers such as Milton Jones and Harry Hill, visitors are never stuck for an evening's entertainment.
