The Shires - A Country Background, But Not What You Might Expect

Singer Crissie Rhodes began her career channelling country legend Dolly Parton in a series of gigs at weddings, pubs and clubs across the country. Guitarist and singer Ben Earle had a similar journey to fame, working as a solo artist and supporting acts like KT Tunstall on tour. After Earle realised he wanted to work in a duo he posted a message on Facebook, calling for a country partner to make some music with. Rhodes responded and by 2012 the pair had been included in BBC Radio 2's documentary Nashville UK, which looked at the rise in popularity of the genre in England.

Catching the attention of Decca Records, a signing in the UK led to a contract with Universal Music Group Nashville, leading the duo to become the first English country act to be signed by a major Nashville label. Making their mark on country radio shows and touring with the likes of Ward Thomas and Little Big Town put the band in a great position on releasing their debut album Brave in March 2015, peaking in the top ten of the UK music charts.
