More About The Nutcracker - Sweet Treat

Based on E.T.A Hoffman's 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', the story was adapted for the ballet by the infinitely talented Russian composer Tchaikovsky. First premiering in 1892 in St. Petersburg, it is Tchaikovsky's Suite from the ballet that has gained the most notoriety, its music woven into popular culture for centuries. The 1960s saw the ballet really kick off, so much so that it's now become part of an annual tradition for many culture vultures.

Taking place on December 24th, the ballet begins with festivities and the decorating of the tree. Upon the arrival of her godfather, Clara receives a human shaped nutcracker that her brother manages to damage. After everyone has gone to bed the little girl comes back downstairs to check on the broken toy but on the stroke of midnight she finds more than just a nut-breaking tool. Gingerbread men turn into soldiers and mice become villains as the now fully grown toy leads the former into battle. Clara's quick thinking saves 'the him' and leads to a magical adventure to the Land of Sweets and Sugarplum Fairies.
