The story takes place during the German-Italian occupation of the Greek Island Cephalonia. One of the biggest plot points of the film is the massacre of Italian soldiers by the German army in September 1943, which came after the Acqui Division of the Italian army refused to surrender. 1,500 Italians were killed in the event, and a further 5,000 were massacred after finally deciding to surrender.
