Dixie Chicks Biography - Breaking the Boundaries of Country Since 1989
Formed by now sisters Martie and Emily Erwin in 1989 alongside now ex-member Laura Lynch, the band began by predominantly playing a mixture of bluegrass and classic country. Their first two albums, released independently, attracted a widespread fan base and soon the record labels started to take notice, eventually leading to them signing by Sony's Nashville division in 1995 and the addition of Natalie Maines to the line-up, along with a more contemporary sound and look. Their debut album Wide Open Spaces landed in 1998 and single releases 'There's Your Trouble', 'You Were Mine' and 'Wide Open Spaces' all hit the top of the US Country Charts. The album has since been certified diamond as the best-selling album from a group in country music history.
Album Fly saw similar success a year later, becoming their second platinum certified record, before the band broke with label Sony and formed Open Wide Records. Focusing on songs with less of a commercial emphasis, the band released the Grammy Award winning record Home in 2001, including 'I Believe in Love' which was dedicated to those who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks in New York. 2003 saw controversy for the group after Natalie Maines made a comment at a London gig about the President of the United States George W. Bush, claiming they were ashamed of his Texas roots after he made the decision to become involved in the Iraq war.
The following years saw the group struggle with the backlash but they made a triumphant return in 2006 with Taking the Long Way, hitting the top spot on the US Billboard charts and winning five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. After taking a few years out to spend time with family the trio returned, playing live shows with the likes of The Eagles, before beginning to work on new material with Maines back in the fold after her solo work. Their first full length tour came in 2013 and now two years on they have announced that a full European tour will kick off in April 2016.
