The team plays in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision and is a member of the Pioneer Football League. The Hatters ran a strong football team for Stetson University from 1901 through 1956 when the school dropped the sport. In 2013, football was reinstated at Stetson University, and the Hatters picked back up their game under head coach Roger Hughes in the 6,000-seat Spec Martin Stadium. The first football games held in the state of Florida were a seven-game series between Stetson and Forbes in 1894. The team went on to claim six state titles and won the 1957 Tangerine Bowl against Arkansas State, 35-20. After a 57-year hiatus, Stetson Hatters came back strong with a 10-3 lead in their first game. The Hatters wrapped up the 2018 season with an 8-2 finish, came in second in the PFL and claimed their first winning record since reinstating the program. Where do the Stetson Hatters play?The Spec Martin Stadium is home to the Stetson Hatters football games as well as the DeLand High School Bulldogs football team and the Central Florida Warriors rugby league team. Though Spec Martin Stadium held the Hatters games before the school decided to discontinue its football program in 1956, significant improvements were made to the building after the Hatters' reinstatement. The improvements included a new press box, new locker rooms and added handicapped and premium seating areas. In 1998, the Spec Martin Stadium was used as the filming location for The Waterboy, which starred Adam Sandler. In the film, the stadium stood in for the movie's fictional South Central Louisiana State Mud Dogs. Spec Martin Stadium also held the 2017 Rugby League World Cup qualifier match between Canada and Jamaica.
