Sporting Kansas City Major League Soccer
Sporting Kansas City play in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the top soccer league in North America and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which gets underway each March, all of them hoping to earn a spot in the playoffs. Every team plays thirty-four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams, five from each conference, go on to the playoffs with the last two teams standing competing for the the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten founding members. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.
From their founding up until 2011 the team was known as the Kansas City Wizards, but changed their name to Sporting Kansas City in keeping with several other MLS teams whose nicknames are influenced by European clubs.
