The South Bay Lakers carry a prestigious basketball legacy, even though they’ve only been a part of the NBA system since 2006. For the first decade of the team's existence they were known as the Los Angeles D-Fenders, as the team played in the NBA D-League. They played their home games during this era at the Toyota Sports Center in LA, and qualified for the league playoffs on a number of occasions, making the finals three times – in 2012, 2014 and 2017 – by dint of winning their division title, the Western division, and later the Pacific division. Their change of name came a year after that final appearance, and from 2017 onwards the team was known by its current name. It didn't continue at the same level of success after this, however, failing to make the playoffs in 2017 and 2018. The team nonetheless acquitted itself well and the new franchise remained every bit as popular with its supporters.
