Meet the Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners were established in 1977 after the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee and were renamed the Milwaukee Brewers, leaving the city of Seattle without a team in Major League Baseball. Almost twenty years after the founding of the team came their first win! 1995 was an important year for the Mariners – it marked their first division win, against the New York Yankees. The Seattle Mariners won again in 1997 and 2001. 2001 was also a significant year for the team – they won 116 games, setting the record for most wins in a single season. The Mariners’ have inducted players such as Randy "The Big Unit" Johnson, Edgar "Papi" Martinez, and Ken "The Kid" Griffey Jr. into the baseball Hall of Fame, the latter two also having their numbers retired by the team. The Seattle Mariners have yet to win a World Series title, but who knows what the future may bring for them? Get Seattle Mariners Spring Training tickets and find out!
The Mariners and sea culture
A new Seattle team had to be established to fill the gap left by the purchasing of the Seattle Pilots away from the city, which meant that the creation of a new name was also necessary. A contest was held in 1976 and the current name was chosen out of 600 entries! The new team was named the "Mariners" – also known as "The M’s" - due to the strong influence of marine culture in Seattle. Their team logo features a nautical star, and their colours are navy blue, teal and silver. Their mascot is the Mariner Moose, beloved by all fans! Be sure to wear their colours at their next match!
