Sanfrecce Hiroshima: an "invincible" team
Sanfrecce Hiroshima play in the Japanese Football League. They were formed in 1938 by an automobile company and at first played in a semi-professional league before advancing to the J1 League. Sanfrecce Hiroshima are one of the three "Invincibles" – Japanese football teams that have played undefeated for an entire season. The first team to be given this name was the British team Preston Northend, which achieved the feat long ago in the 1888 to 1889 season. Many-time Emperor Cup contenders and winners
In 1969 Sanfrecce Hiroshima won the Asian Cup Club, which is now known as the AFC Championship. The club has, however, also suffered setbacks. They were briefly demoted to the J2 league after a defeat against Kyoto Sanga in 2007, but fortunately they only spent a year there. They have won or made it the final stages of The Emperor’s Cup many times. The winners of this prestigious competition are considered to be the best football club in Japan and wear the Yatagarasu emblem on their shirts for the next season. The first Emperor’s Cup game was in 1921 and it is now the longest-running Japanese football competition. Football might not normally be associated with Japan, but was actually introduced in 1873 by Lieutenant-Commander Archibald Lucius Douglas of the British Royal Navy, who taught to Japanese naval cadets to play. Together they are hard to beat
The word "san" is the Japanese for "three", while "frecce" is an Italian word and means "arrows". The name comes from a legend about lord Mori Motonari, who famously said to his sons that whereas a single arrow can be snapped with no problem at all, three arrows that are held together are not easy to break. A similar story can be found in "The Secret Book of the Mongols", in which a woman gives each of her five sons an arrow to break and then shows them that five arrows bound as one are unbreakable. The moral of these tales is that when people work as a team, they are not so easy to break. Like the three arrows in their name, Sanfrecce Hiroshima are a cohesive team that have proved themselves very hard to beat.
