Room on the Broom: A Children's Adventure Story That Even Adults Will Love
"Room on the Broom" has been adapted for the stage from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's best selling children's book. It's wacky, wonky, and a lot of silly fun. There's a witch and puppets and a disco-dancing dragon, and that's only the beginning. This play proves how fun theatre can be for kids.
"Room on the Broom" is a children's adventure story centring on a witch and her cat. In a series of madcap misadventures, the witch and her cat are joined by a dog, a bird, a frog, and, as the title of the play suggests, there's just not enough room on the broom for everybody. Things really begin to get interesting when the witch's hat and wand blow away in a gust of wind. Now, the witch and her crew need to set about retrieving all her belongings. They meet a host of colourful characters along the way and even come face to face with a dragon. With a tidy running time of 55 minutes, "Room on the Broom" is perfect for all ages.
The new production of "Room on the Broom" is playing in London's West End at the Lyric Theatre. The Lyric Theatre is the oldest running theatre on Shaftsbury Avenue. "Room on the Broom" had a sell out run in 2012 and is back by popular demand. The play is geared towards children 3 and up, so performance times are scheduled during the day. "Room on the Broom" is tenth on the list of England's most popular bedtime stories. Author Julia Donaldson originally wrote songs for children's television. Over the course of her career, Donaldson has published 184 works, including several pieces that are intended only for school use. Her most popular works are the ones in which she collaborated with illustrator Axel Scheffler, such as "The Gruffalo," "Room on the Broom," and "Stick Man."
Yvette Clutterbuck is playing the role of Witch. Trained in Musical Theatre at Mountainview, Clutterbuck has also been seen in Jack and the Beanstalk playing the role of Jack. Hertfordshire Theatre School graduate David Gurrad plays both Dog and Bird, and 2011 Adelaide Fringe Best Performer winner Dan Foxsmith is cast as the Dragon who wants to eat them all up. Emma Maclennan rounds out the cast as Cat. The production features lighting design by James Whiteside, puppet design by Yvonne Stone, and Jon Fiber and Andy Shaw, of Shock Productions, handle the sound and music design.
British writer and playwright and 2011-2013 Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson published "Room on the Broom" in 2002. Axel Scheffler illustrated the story, creator of The Gruffalo series. Since its publication, the popular children's bedtime story has been translated in 21 languages; it has also won six book awards. Due to its success, "Room on the Broom" was made into an animated film in 2012. In 2013, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film.
"Room on the Broom" is directed by Olivia Jacobs, Joint Artistic Director at Tall Stories. Toby Mitchell is the creative producer. Jacob and Mitchell are the founders of Tall Stories, which is the same troupe that created the smash hit, "The Gruffalo."
