Ringo Starr - a hard day's Knight
From the drummer with The Beatles to a knight of the realm, it's been quite a journey for Richard Starkey - that's Sir Ringo Starr to you and me. A string of honours for Ringo Starr
Ringo Starr was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music and charity. Actually, it was her grandson, William, Duke of Cambridge, who carried out the ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The honour came a mere 53 years after the same monarch made Ringo, along with John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the mid-1960s at the height of Beatlemania. Ringo, born in Liverpool in 1940 and an early skiffle fan, replaced Pete Best as The Beatles' drummer. He was with the Merseysiders until their famous split in 1970. Following that, he forged a solo career as musician, actor - and children's television star. Along with fellow Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, he remains a household name. With his dry Scouse wit, he remains a favourite entertainer for so many people in Britain and beyond. While for older fans, he will always be an ex-Beatle, for a younger generation he remains the narrator of classic children's programme Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Ringo Starr and the All Stars
Over a period of nearly thirty years, various incarnations of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band have delighted fans on tour with what Ringo calls a "Peace and Love festival". Colin Hay, Steve Lukather, once of Toto, Graham Goldman of 10cc fame, Gregg Rolie, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette have showcased their talents on his 2018 team. "There is no greater joy for me than playing great music with great musicians," declares Ringo. Music clearly runs in the family; his son Zak Starkey is also a drummer. In 2017, he produced his 19th solo studio recording, Give More Love, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as an ex-Beatle and solo artist. Among his fans and contemporaries is artists Phil Collins, and Ringo has also performed alongside rock greats, such as Eric Clapton and Sir Elton John.
