Born in Lancashire, the young Astley was spotted by Pete Waterman while performing with soul band FBI. Impressed with the talent before their eyes, the music mogul and his songwriting partners Mike Stock and Matt Aitken took the singer under their wing and to their London studio. Working his way up from teaboy to recording artist, he released his debut solo single 'Never Gonna Give You Up' at the age of 21, finding staggering success. Not only did the record go on to become the UK's biggest selling single of the year, but it also hit the top of the charts in 16 countries.

Debut album Whenever You Need Somebody subsequently sold 15 million copies worldwide, broke into the US Top 10 and won him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
