The Prince Edward theatre: surviving and thriving

In 1930, London's West End welcomed its newest playhouse when the Prince Edward theatre opened with a showing of the musical "Rio Rita" ushering in a decade long history of providing quality stage entertainment for public consumption. During the years immediately preceding and during the war it would be converted first into a cabaret and dance club (the London Casino), survive one of the worst nightmares of the blitz on London and lend itself to the pleasure of the Crown as a servicemen's club (Queensberry All Services Club) in 1942 until war's end when it was once again restored as the London Casino. Prince Edward theatre along with Aldwych Theatre, Theatre Royal Haymarket and Queen's Theatre are all West End playhouses. The post war years would find the site adding another layer to its history when it was selected to become the country's very first Cinerama, premiering its first showing in 1954 and its last twenty-four years later. During that time, audiences beheld the cinematic wonders of "Battle of the Bulge", "Ben-Hur" and "Patton" as 70mm widescreen projections gained in popularity among the public. The return of musical productions and more

Under new ownership and a refurbishment the site would once again return to its original purpose as a theatre in summer of 1978 with the debut of "Evita the Musical" and would go on to run some of the most popular musicals in recent memory including "Mamma Mia", "Jersey Boys" and a revival of "Miss Saigon". Another 1992 renovation saw the venue remodeled and enlarged to accommodate a capacity of just over 1700 as theatrical presentations became in vogue once more - a sign of their enduring popularity.
