Paul Simon: still going strong after six decades in music
As one half of legendary American folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon provided both the lyrics and music to some of the best-loved records of all time. The pair were one of the most popular and best-selling music groups of the 1960s, with hits such as "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", and "The Boxer", while their final studio record, Bridge over Troubled Water (1970), is one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The pair split that same year, but reformed several times – perhaps most famously in 1981 for New York's "The Concert in Central Park", which was attended by more than 500,000 fans. Since then, Paul Simon has enjoyed a long and successful solo career, with highlights including three UK number one studio albums – Graceland (which has sold 16 million copies worldwide), The Rhythm of the Saints and 2016's Stranger to Stranger – and places in the Rolling Stone's '100 Greatest Guitarists' and '100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time'.
Through his solo and collaborative work, Simon has also earned sixteen Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement Award, while both he and Art Garfunkel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Paul Simon: songwriting extraordinaire and comeback king
After the split of Simon and Garfunkel in 1970, Paul Simon released his first solo album, self-titled effort Paul Simon in 1972, to both critical and commercial success. The record reached number one in multiple countries (including the UK) and proved to be just the beginning of what has been a long and successful solo career.
1986's Graceland was a major commercial hit, and saw Simon's return to the forefront of popular music. It was lauded by music critics, won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. Graceland is frequently cited as one of the best albums of the 1980s, and is present on lists of greatest albums ever by numerous publications. 1990 follow-up The Rhythm of the Saints was another huge success, scoring Simon his second consecutive UK number one and receiving some of the best reviews of his career.
The success of both albums allowed Simon to stage another New York concert in 1991. Almost a decade after "The Concert in Central Park" with Garfunkel, Simon returned to the same venue with African and South American bands. The success of the concert surpassed all expectations and is still one of the largest concert audiences in history with over 750,000 fans attending. Simon has since called the concert "...the most memorable moment in my career".
After another brief reunion with Art Garfunkel in 1993, Simon released five more studio albums over the following two decades, including another UK number one in Stranger to Stranger (2016). An experimental album that makes use of custom-made instruments, it received some of the best critical reviews of Simon's career and marked the beginning of another upturn in his popularity.
