Paradise Lost Biography - Boundary Pushing Goth Metallers
Inspired by the likes of Kreator, Candlemass and Black Sabbath, this impressive group formed in 1988 and recorded a string of demo tapes before signing to Peaceville Records in 1989. Written in the death/doom style, their self-titled debut album gained notoriety amongst both fans and critics, leading the way for their more progressive second album Gothic. The album - considered by many to be the group's defining work - married gothic and melodic elements to create a boundary pushing masterpiece within the extreme metal scene and pioneering the gothic metal genre.
The late '90s saw the group begin to apply an electronic approach to their sound, utilising electronica and synth pop techniques on 1997 album One Second and propelling the band into Top 10 charts across Europe. This electronic edge eventually wore off and in 2002 the group began to return to their more straightforward guitar sound. Their return to form saw 2007's In Requiem welcomed with open arms as their old gothic metal sensibilities once again resurfaced. Having recently released their thirteenth studio album this long-running group continue to draw in impressed fans with their virtuoso guitar solos and insane drums.
