Old Dominion Monarchs Tickets
Old Dominion first fielded a football team in 1930. At that time, the school was a branch of William & Mary and the team was known as the Braves. The team lasted only 11 seasons, through the bulk of the Great Depression. It was done in by a number of problems, including a $10,000 debt. The Braves were also hampered by regulations prohibiting freshman players. The school had an accreditation issue. World War II was also raging, and the US would soon join in. None of this is a recipe for success in football. Old Dominion revived football as of 2009. One reason was that alumni rarely returned to campus. Exit interviews of students also pointed to a desire for football on campus. ODU was an independent until 2011. The first 10 years of the new program have been considerably less rocky than the previous iteration of the team. The ODU Monarchs have played in Division I FBS's Conference USA since 2014.
