Where did the “ ”Tar Heels“ ” name originate?The exact origins of the name “ ”Tar Heels,“ ” is unknown, but many believe it is related to the tar, turpentine and pitch industries in the early years of the state's history. The name became widely used at some time during the Civil War era. One popular legend has it that it was used during the Civil War to say the state's Confederate troops “ ”stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels.“ ”
