From cup semi-finals to name changes
Affiliated with numerous amateur and semi-professional sides around the southeast Wales region, the Dragons joined the Cardiff Blues, Ospreys Rugby Union and Scarlets Rugby Union as their homeland's representatives in the Pro14 (then the Celtic League) in 2003. Originally known as the Newport Gwent Dragons, the club finished a creditable third in their first season and achieved a fourth-place finish a year later. Over the next decade, the club helped to launch the careers of several Wales internationals, such as Dan Lydiate, Taulupe Faletau and Cory Hill, who alongside Michael Owen and Gareth Cooper all also earned call-ups to the British and Irish Lions squad. The Dragons have reached the European Challenge Cup semi-finals on numerous occasions, including 2007, 2015 and 2016, and in 2011 reached the same stage of the Anglo-Welsh Cup. Following their takeover in 2017, the Welsh Rugby Union decided to drop the Newport and Gwent from the club's name and rechristen them simply as the Dragons. You can buy and sell Dragons Rugby tickets for both home and away games on StubHub.
Rodney Parade - a historic sporting venue
The club formerly known as Newport Gwent Dragons play their home games at Rodney Parade, an 8,700-capacity stadium which is also home to fellow rugby union team Newport RFC and football club Newport County. Built way back in 1877, it's the second oldest sports stadium in the Football League behind Preston North End's Deepdale and has staged numerous Home Nations Championship rugby union matches. Fans who attend the historic venue should look forward to watching a passionate and intense game of rugby union featuring a largely homegrown side, with many regulars emerging from the club's youth academy. However, the team has also looked to the likes of South Africa, England, Samoa and New Zealand to bolster their chances in the Pro14 league and European competitions over the years, too. And although Rodney Parade consistently provides a highly-charged and exciting atmosphere, the venue truly comes alive when local rivals the Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets come to town.
