Born in 1984, the singer is originally from Mexico City. She has spent much of her musical career signed to Sony-BMG and is equally at home performing Latin rock and bossanova songs as she is pop.
Natalia LaFourcade's career milestones
The daughter of a Chilean musician, LaFourcade grew up in a musical family. As a schoolgirl, the performer learned to play several musical instruments, including the saxophone, the piano and the guitar. However, her main interest was in singing, and the young musician ended up forming a girl band in 1998. This short-lived project, called Twist, was not commercially successful but gave the singer her first taste of what it was like to perform professionally.
When she was 17 years of age, LaFourcade met Loris Ceroni, a record producer from Ravenna in Italy. Initially, he encouraged the singer to join a band but he ended up producing her as a solo artist. The debut work mixed rock, pop and bossanova beats in songs such as “Elefantes” and “Te Quiero Dar”. Another song, “En El 2000”, ended up being a hit single for the singer. In 2003, LaFourcade received a Grammy Award nomination. She was put up for the Best New Artist prize.
In 2005, the singer returned with a new album, but this was made with her backing band and billed as ‘Natalia y La Forquetina’. Many critics noted the singer’s developing songwriting ability and her more mature approach to vocal interpretation. The artist then went on to tour throughout Latin American and the United States to promote the work. In 2006, while she was still on tour, the singer announced that she would return to a solo career.
After recording an instrumental album for her label, LaFourcade got back to singing in 2009, when Hu Hu Hu came out. It went into the top 10 in the Mexican album charts. At the Latin Grammy Awards of that year, the singer was nominated for the Best Female Pop Album. Other works that LaFourcade has released include Hasta La Raiz of 2015 and Musas of 2017. The first of these won the Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album award at that year’s Grammys. It also won several plaudits for its skilful audio engineering.
