Spain reigns supreme
Also known as the Valencian Community Motorcycle Grand Prix and Gran Premi de la Comunitat Valenciana de motociclisme, the MotoGP Valencia was first held at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in 1999. Italy's Gianluigi Scalvini (Moto3), Japan's Tohru Ukawa (Moto2) and France's Regis Laconi (MotoGP) won their respective races at the inaugural event. But over the next two decades, the most successful competitors proved to be the homegrown talents of Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo and Australia's Casey Stoner, while the likes of Finland's Mika Kallio, Portugal's Miguel Oliveira and Italian motor racing legend Valentino Rossi also made it to the top of the podium on several occasions. Home ground appears to be an advantage for the Spaniards, with the nation spawning nearly three times as many winners as its closest rival Italy in the race's first 20 years, while Honda and Aprilia both enjoyed more than a dozen victories each to become the most successful manufacturers. Twists and turns galore
With the Catalan, Aragon, Spanish and Valencia Grand Prix, motorcycling fans have four opportunities to watch the world's best riders in action in Spain. But as one of the newest on the block, the latter is often the most exciting. Named after the late local hero Ricardo Tormo and situated in the village of Cheste, 20 km west of Valencia, the circuit was built to be spectator-friendly, ensuring that wherever you sit you will be able to watch the action unfold without constantly checking the venue's big screens. With five left-handed and eight right-handed corners, the four-kilometre track, which is also used in Formula 1, also has more twists and turns than most other MotoGP venues. However, its long straight still allows riders to reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. It's little surprise therefore that the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, which also boasts a pit complex featuring 48 garages, regularly attracts 150,000 visitors.
